Winemaking

I always thought making wine would be a great pastime. A fine glass of wine with a gourmet meal seems to be just the right pairing. Although I wasn’t sure acquiring fruit and making it from scratch would produce the best drinkable product, I didn’t really know where to start.

Then I met Connie. It turns out her parents got into winemaking quite a few years ago and made very fine wines from Winexpert kits. As a matter-of-fact, I prefer these wines over most store bought wines because they are less acidic and don’t have that bite characteristic of commercial wines. I understand part of that is due to lower levels of sulfites used in the kits. A short time later, friends of Connie’s mom who also made wine, were getting older and decided to get out of the hobby. They offered us their equipment: 3 primaries, 3 carboys, a corking apparatus and a Buon-Vino filtering system. Thank you Harold and Patty. Connie’s mom gifted us the remaining pieces of equipment to make wine effortless and so we began.

With 3 primaries, we can make 3 kits at once, minimizing effort and maximizing efficiency. Those 3 kits can produce 90 bottles of wine. We often will go through the process 3 times a year resulting in 270 bottles for our wine cellar.

Winexpert kits produce very high quality wines and often win home winemaking competitions. While they don’t share all of their secrets (e.g. what ratios of grapes are used in the concentrated juices in the kits), their artisans do create kits that produce outstanding wines.
