The Brandner Glacier is located in the far west of Austria on the Austrian-Swiss border. It is in the state of Voralberg, which is the area to the west of the state of Tyrol. This progression of maps will help you locate the Brandner Glacier.
In 2018, my sister Karen and I took a train to Bludenz. From there we took a bus up the Brandnertal[valley] to the village of Brand. We stayed their one night, checking out the village and its cemetery as well as the hiking paths we would use the next day.
Our plan was to hike up to the Oberzalimhütte the first night, climb the Liebersteig[my sister’s favorite part of the hike] and stay two nights at the Mannheimer Hütte up at the Brandner glacier. After that we’d hike across the glacier to summit the Schesaplana, the highest mountain in Voralberg at 9,724 feet [2,964 m]. Traversing then via the Südwandsteig in Switzerland before descending down to the Totalphütte for our 4th night on the trail. From there it would be an easy hike back down to Brand and a celebratory dinner.
