I found this in some personal items of my grandmother Kuni Brandner(née Linzner). She would have been 10 years old when school started in 1901, so I’m thinking maybe 4th grade. This was back when a single teacher could handle 68 students in 8 levels of instruction.

My Grandmother started out first grade in the Frey School. In that school, she said classes were taught in German, and they learned English in the one hour of English class. That would have been about 1897. They spoke German at home and her dad always asked her to share what she learned about English in school and from her beginning English texts(picture books).
