A Woodcarver’s Mallet

Although I’m still putting my shop together with a dedicated turning area, I’ve experimented with making a few other things. There are different kinds of turning and different tools required depending on the task at hand. Spindle turning has the grain running along the axis of the lathe, and the proper tools to use are a spindle gouge and/or a skew chisel for typical shaping of beads and coves.

I thought I’d make something practical for practice so I took a piece of oak firewood and decided to look for a Carver’s Mallet plan online. I then shaped my piece of firewood, first into a cylinder, then the head portion followed by the handle portion. It turned out rather nice for a beginner.
